AI Bills Are Baffling the C-Suite After Shift to Usage-Based Pricing

The Register, Friday, July 3rd, 2026

Nearly a third of executives struggle to understand AI costs as vendors shift to usage-based billing.

Companies deploying AI at scale face mounting challenges with unpredictable expenses following the industry shift toward consumption-based pricing. According to KPMG's survey of 2,145 senior leaders, 29 percent struggle to understand their operating costs as they scale enterprise AI deployments.

The transition affects major providers including Anthropic, OpenAI, and GitHub. Organizations are responding by reassessing AI strategies, with nearly half delaying deployments when expenses exceed anticipated value.

Lower-cost, higher-quality models have become the fastest-growing influence on purchasing decisions, suggesting enterprises now prioritize measurable returns even as Amazon and Microsoft commit hundreds of billions to infrastructure.
