Why Enterprise AI Agents Disappoint (And Why The Fix Is Not 'Better Agents')

Citrix Blogs, Thursday, May 7th, 2026

Enterprise AI deployments fail because organizations skip foundational steps and jump directly to autonomous agents without proper preparation.

Brian Madden argues that the disappointing performance of enterprise AI agents stems not from inadequate technology, but from organizations attempting to jump directly from basic chatbot usage ('crawl') to autonomous agents ('run') without the critical intermediate 'walk' phase.

The 'walk' phase involves teaching AI how the organization actually works, providing context, building persistent skills, and establishing judgment guidelines - entially treating agents like human workers who need proper onboarding and training.

Rather than the solution being better agents, Madden contends that successful enterprise AI requires a seven-stage progression where each layer builds on the previous one, and organizations must match the appropriate AI approach (from simple in-context reasoning to full autonomous agents) to each specific task based on cost and requirements.
